Trigger Warning: Sensitive issues such as rape is discussed in the following post.
Hello Humans.
As time progresses...it's becoming increasingly difficult to maintain faith in humanity.
Initially I was going to just write about all the different incidents around the world surrounding issues women face. But it pains me as well as sends chills down my spine, as a young woman, that one mere blog is not enough to cover all the atrocities that occur today in each country (let alone all the atrocities all over the world).
Today, I want to have a look at India.
One thing that is key to note, is that I absolutely love India; they don't call it Incredible India for nothing. I love my country, after all the blood of my homeland courses through my veins, but it's also vital to recognise and solve the problems that reside in such a wonderful country.
I am very proud to be from the country that has won the T20 World Cup in cricket, successfully executed the Chandrayaan 2 project as well as produced Oscar Winning songs from awe-striking movies like 'RRR' but I am also appalled to see the same wonderful country be listed for the most dangerous country for women to live in.
The bottom line is, the glory from the rich culture and heritage India is home to, should not act as a veil to conceal the problems and horrors that have taken place.
There's this article on BBC News that I was reading, and every incident that each woman from 23 to 46 has gone through, as a doctor, in a hospital is absolutely revolting. But most recently, the rape and murder of Dr Moumita Debnath in a hospital in Kolkata has left the women of India and women around the world speechless.
From videos encouraging justice for this case to marches and strikes and stories raising awareness in order to campaign relentlessly for the justice of women; everyone's waiting for change.
However, to me, it feels like we're constantly being plunged in and out of an endless cycle of:
Raising awareness on something
Making videos, movies and posts to remember the individuals that have suffered
Feeling sympathetic towards such individuals
And then going back to our daily lives before another tragedy occurs
Why do we have to wait for a tragedy to occur in order to ensure the basic needs of safety in hospitals should be the standard?
Why do we have to wait for a tragedy to teach young boys and men how to behave and respect women?
Why do we have to wait for a tragedy to raise awareness about something as simple as not objectifying women?
Why do we have to wait for a tragedy to speak the truth about the lack of equality between men and women?
Why do we have to wait for a tragedy?
Waiting anxiously, in anticipation with the faint light of hope to witness and see change, to see a world where women would not have to worry about men 24/7, about being cat-called randomly, about being randomly attacked, about just feeling unsafe and vulnerable at a party, at the park, at work and for some, even at home.
On average, 90 rapes were reported everyday in India in 2022, with an average of 30,000 per year, which only makes me shudder at the thought of how many more go unreported and actually occur.
No, wearing a crop top, shorts, makeup, or short dresses is not a woman "asking for it", many videos and evidence online clearly shows that clothing and what victims were wearing did not fit this stereotype. It was in fact disgusting to find out that the age groups at which victims were at ranged from a 3 months old baby to an old woman. So teaching young girls and women to dress in a particular way is not the way to solve this problem.
Misogyny is the first thing that fuels such behaviour and horrific incidents.
If we want to see change, men would have to be the change. And the mind set off people in general needs to change.
This faint light of hope, slowly dims as incidents such as these occur, and sometimes my faith in humanity does fade, but even if these incidents were not raised awareness of, the light of hope wouldn't stop within us, so please continue to spread the news, and fight for justice.
