Categories we Create

The human brain is an interesting organ which likes to split things into categories of our likes and dislikes.

If we look at the categories the perspective of school our brain might make a separate category for it. However after we pick up the category of school we are more likely to have subjects split into the categories of what we like and dislike - a very common thing. The categories these subjects are put into could be due to how well we do in them or if they are fun in general; mostly the categories we have fun and enjoy are the ones we are good at. But what we tend to forget is that in each subject there are many subtopics and new things we can learn. Perhaps even though there are interesting topics in some subjects it turns out boring when learning about them because our mind tricks us into believing the lesson is boring or hard to do.

Another problem is that we like to have something interesting and fun to wake up to which is why I found myself hoping for something interesting or different to happen in school each day. It is as if I am bored of my daily routine and as if my life is stuck in one huge circle from waking up, to going to school, to having lunch, to coming back home, to having dinner, then sleeping and starting this all over again. This is probably why we wake up early when we have school trips, presentations or other activities as they automatically go into the fun and interesting category even if they occur in school as it is something different that breaks our day to day life routine.

Categories definitely have their benefits but are not always the best. Our brain has developed the habit of categorising everything and starting to having expectations. For example we might we hate doing something so our expectations would be that that activity would be terrible therefore our mindset is already negative towards that activity misleading our brains into not enjoying the activity or vice versa.

This can also happen with our impression of people. At school for example, we categorise the people into: smart, pretty, popular, creative, athletic which sets expectations for all these people and for our attitudes towards them. Although, these categories might affect the other people being categorised more as they would have pressure to like pretty constantly if they were known as the school's beauty or to study hard so they could be the toppers. Peer pressure is another main reason why lots of young people could experience a lot of stress early in their school career.

This can also occur by race, religion, accent, cast and many more categories regarding physical appearance.

Which is why we also need to teach our brain to see some things as one, it might help us to understand people more and learn about things with a more positive attitude.
